Crowdfunding has developed from a digital niche, into a powerful fundraising tool utilised to raise funds for everything from quirky card games, imaginative fashion to “building a goddamn Tesla Museum”.
As funding becomes scarce and competitive, cultural organisations must diversify their incomes, and have looked to crowdfunding as a way to mobilise their often significant fan bases for support. But with so many crowdfunding initiatives now out there, how can cultural organisations stand out from the crowd and garner support. How should not-for-profits engage with the incentives programme. Should cultural organisation be using established platforms like Kickstarter, or applying crowdfunding initiatives in a bespoke way?
Crowdfunding, the seventh event in our ASPIRE Fundraising and Philanthropy series, will explore all these questions, sharing best practice and lessons learned from some of the sector's recent crowdfunding initiatives.
There will be plenty of time to network with colleagues, share ideas, be inspired by each other and to think about what your museum needs to do next.

11.10-11.40 - Funding from the Crowd with DONATE: Battersea Arts Centre and the Reburial of Richard III
Olivia Mason, Development and Communications Director, National Funding Schemes - Olivia will be sharing recent case studies and lessons learned from a variety of arts, heritage and cultural organisations, and discussing how museums and other cultural organisations can get involved with DONATE, the UK's mobile giving tool for the arts.
11.40-12.05 - Empowering donors with choice: how Sound and Music built a commercially inspired crowdfunding platform to great effect
Adam Cooper, Head of Development, Sound and Music - will share experience of setting up samgiving.org, a bespoke site for the organisation, in place of an established crowdfunding platform. He will talk about why they elected to go this way, the benefits and the drawbacks.

15.50-13.30 - Crowdfunding: new income streams and audience development tool for museums and galleries
Kertsin Glasow, Senior Marketing Manager, The Art Fund - Using a variety of case studies, Kerstin will share the Art Fund's and its partner museums' experience so far regarding the opportunities for crowd-funding - ranging from democratising museum philanthropy and engaging completely new audience segments, to new ways of communicating with donors. Delegates will find our about the advantages and disadvantages of crowd-funding, the opportunities and risk involve in running a crowd-funding campaign, and get top tips on what makes for an attractive crowd-funding project and how they can ensure their campaign succeeds.
13.30-13.55 - Case Study: Llandudno Museum
Helen Bradley, Heritage Tourism Project Officer, Llandudno Museum - Helen led on a Crowdfunding appeal for Llandudno Museum to raise funding for the homecoming exhibition of Blodwen - a Neolithic skeleton originally from Llandudno which has spent 123 years in a museum in Lancashire. She'll talk about the benefits of Crowdfunding using an established platform, offer a few tips, and highlight some knock-on benefits of Crowdfunding from a PR perspective.
14.20-14.40 - The Spitfire: Crowdfunding or public subscription?
Rachel Cockett, Director of Development, Birmingham Museums Trust - will give a case study of the Thinktank Spitfire crowdfunding project, which was a success, but did not work out as expected. Rachel will share lessons learned, and how they have influenced the role of crowdfunding in the Museums' broader fundraising strategy.

Participants are invited to arrive from 10.30am for coffee. The day will start promptly at 11am and will include a networking lunch. We aim to finish the day by 3pm.
