Does it all add up?

This is a workshop for decision makers who need an understanding of budgets and museum finances.  Learn how to work with accounting and budgeting principles and to read financial statements, management accounts and much more.

The museum sector is thinking a lot more about how it can generate income and be more commercially minded but if we are going to build a sustainable future we also need to be confident with the basics – understanding balance sheets, cost allocation / recognition, reporting, financial planning and budgeting. 

‘Does it all add up?’ won’t turn you into a budding accountant but it will provide an opportunity to develop an understanding of accounting and budgeting principles.  It will offer guidance on reading accounts; including the differences between financial statements, management accounts, cash, profits, liabilities and more. 
There will be plenty of time built into the programme for asking the experts questions, sharing experiences and ideas for managing museum finances and to think about what your museum needs to do next. 
This event is for decision makers who need a basic understanding of budgets and museum finances.
 

Facilitators:
Lucy Shaw, Oxford ASPIRE Coordinator
Lucy has been working as the Oxford ASPIRE Coordinator since August 2012.  She began her museum career in the early 1990s as a social history curator but for the last 10 years has worked as a consultant specialising in workforse and organisation development.  Lucy is a trained facilitator and coach.

Kathering Moss, Charity Consultant, Critchleys Chartered Accountants
Kath joined Critchley's as a Charity Consultant in December 2009.  Prior to this, she chaired Mazars charity sector group where she was audit and advisory partner specialising in the charity sector.  Kath is a Financial Corporate Accountant, holds the diploma in Charity Accounting qualification and the Chartered Institute of Internal Auditors, Internal Audit Certificate.  She works closely with the Chritchley's charity team advising clients on issues such as strategic planning, governance, controls, risk and assurance as well as running tailored training sessions when required.  Kath is a trustee of an overseas AIDS charity and an independent member of the Audit Committee or a national disability charity.  She is also the director of a grant making trust.

Jossie Austen, Senior Campaign Executive, Museums and Collections, University of Oxford
Jossie is responsible for fundraising across the Univeristy of Oxford Museums and Collections, representing the Pitt Rivers, Oxford University Museum of Natural History, the Museum of the History of Science and the Oxford Botanic Garden and Harcourt Arboretum.  She has worked in a series of cultural and educational institution, including the Ashmolean, MoMA New York and the Peggy Guggenheim Collection in Venice.  Holding an MA in Art Business from Sotheby's Institute of Art, Jossie has worked in development for seven years planning and implementing fundraising strategies.

Andrew Noton, Head of Finance, Ashmolean Museum
Andrew has been working at the Ashmolean Museum since July 2006 as the Head of Finance.  Andrew qualified with the Chartered Institute of Management Accountants in 1997 whilst working for Vodafone.  During his time at Vodafone he held the position of Management Accountant for a Service Provider and Network Accountant with responsibility for bedgeting and reporting of annual expenditure in the region of £300m.  Whilst at the Ashmolean Museum, Andrew has held the responsibility for budgeting and reporting of the Museum's operations and for Capital redevelopment projects.

Participants are invited to arrive from 10.00 for coffee.  The day will start promptly at 10.30 and will include a networking lunch.  We aim to fiish the day by 15.00.
