New and enhanced event programme launched for cultural sector professionals

Oxford University Museums Partnership (OUMP) is delighted to announce that it will be expanding its successful programme of knowledge exchange events for museums and the cultural sector.

OUMP launched its original events programme in 2012 as part of its Arts Council-funded Major Partner Museum programme. The programme focussed on Commercial Enterprise and Fundraising & Philanthropy as priority areas identified through a sector consultation. Events bring together sector professionals from across the UK to share their expertise, knowledge, challenges and practical tools through presentations, case studies, facilitated discussion and networking. Over the past four years OUMP has delivered 28 events attended to 1,000 delegates from across the UK.

Following the success of the current events calendar, OUMP is expanding its offer with a programme of over 20 innovative workshops and conferences in 2016-18. Commercial Enterprise and Fundraising & Philanthropy will continue to be key themes, but the programme will now include the areas of Digital Engagement, Communication and Audience Development.

In addition, the new programme will include a series of one-day events inspired by Oxford Cultural Leaders, OUMP’s residential leadership programme for museums, heritage and the arts delivered in partnership with the Saïd Business School. Learning from the Oxford Cultural Leaders has sparked a series of events which aim to encourage delegates to experiment with new ways of thinking and working. OUMP has already held two OCL spin out events and looks forward to delivering a number of further sessions looking at entrepreneurial approaches for not-profit organisations and futures thinking for the cultural sector.

As new models for both operating the institution and engaging its audiences emerge, the need for agile, adaptive leadership has never been higher. The OUMP programme aims to equip the next generation of leaders for this period of change and to maximise the opportunities that will be presented."

Risk and Reward: Enabling a Culture of Innovation, 10 June 2016

Museums and cultural organisations are facing significant challenges in the current, fast-changing environment: digital is revolutionising the way individuals engage with the world, the demographic make-up of society is undergoing a significant shift, and traditional funding models a no longer sustainable.

In order to turn these challenges into opportunities, museums and cultural organisations need to be adaptive, entrepreneurial and innovative. This one day conference will explore how museums and cultural organisations are changing their organisational cultures and encouraging their teams to try new ways of working, break down traditional barriers and embrace risk.

Capacity Building(s): creative approaches to hiring out cultural spaces and managing events, 28 July 2016

Museums and cultural organisations are becoming more adept and increasingly creative when it comes to utilising their buildings for venue hire, and when managed successfully this can provide an important revenue stream. Venue hire can also provide opportunities to bring cultural spaces to life and encouraging different audiences to see and use them in new ways.

This one day conference will explore how museums and cultural organisations are developing their venue hire offer, experimenting with different uses for their buildings to generate income, and creating unusual, and often quirky places to inspire and delight public and commercial audiences, whilst remaining sensitive to the primary purpose of the space.
