Oxford Museums provide free WiFi

26 March 15 -- jsuess

A brand new, completely free, Wi-Fi service is now available throughout the Oxford University Museums thanks to Super Connected Oxford.

Visitors to the Ashmolean Museum, Museum of Natural History, Museum of the History of Science and Pitt Rivers Museum will now be able to access free public Wi-Fi when visiting the museum.

As well as being a convenient service to the more than 2 million visitors who come to the museums each year, Wi-Fi enables the museums to enhance their offer, providing additional digital content, learning resources and information about the collections.

This will enhance visitor experience through access to additional information about what’s on that day, maps and highlighted objects,” Haas Ezzet, Head of IT, Pitt Rivers Museum.

This service was enabled by the Super Connected Oxford initiative, led by Oxford City Council and funded by the Department of Culture Media and Sport and the Oxfordshire Local Enterprise Partnership. The City Council has installed free Wi-Fi hotspots in 40 public buildings across the city as part of this initiative, including in the four university museums, which collectively welcome more than 2 million visitors each year.

Professor Paul Smith, Director of the Museum of Natural History, said: “Oxford University Museums are delighted to be able to offer visitors free Wi-Fi through the Super Connected Oxford initiative. Together the four museums welcome more than two million visitors a year. Thanks to Super Connected Oxford we are now able to offer those visitors additional digital content, learning resources and information about the collections, as well as the convenience of a free internet connection during their visit.

Councillor Bob Price, Leader of Oxford City Council, said: “Wi-Fi access is a crucial element in providing information and guidance to visitors, as well as facilitating business and social communications. We have delivered on that commitment as this Wi-Fi in the main public buildings, museums and galleries demonstrates.
