Building Communications for Fundraising Success

This first seminar in the Fundraising and Philanthropy series will explore utilising communications to support your organisation's development activities.  It will look at social media, improving stewardship and managing donor relations, as well as targeting your appeals to the right audiences using the right communications tools.

The context and dynamics of funding has changed fundamentally for museums in recent years.   The current economic situation may get better, but the changes to funding structures will be lasting and arguably even more competitive.  

Museums need to get better at asking for money and focus their attentions on increasing and diversifying funding sources. This means that the people working in museums need to be equipped with the right skills and competencies to do the job well. 

Building communications for fundraising success, is the first seminar in the ASPIRE fundraising and philanthropy series of events which aim to spark ideas, share and develop knowledge and increase confidence around fundraising and philanthropy.  Through case studies and facilitated conversations this seminar will explore how museums can build effective communications for fundraising. 

The session will cover a range of areas including; raising the profile of your organisation through smart use of social media; top tips on improving stewardship and managing donors effectively to keep them happy and involved; and targeting appeals so they attract a range of people.

This event is for decision makers working in museums.

Susie Billings, Donor Engagement Manager, Ashmolean Museum
Susie has worked at the Ashmolean since 2008, initially in the Eastern Art department before moving to the development team in 2010.  Her current role focuses on communications including appeals, stewardship and events, and support for major gifts.  Before joining the museum, Susie worked on communications for the launch of the Univeristy of Oxford's campaign Oxford Thinking, as Development Officer at the Said Business School, and as a funding advice worker for Oxfordshire Community and Voluntary Action, providing support for community and voluntary groups with applications and funding strategies.

Sarah Casey, Development Officer, Ashmolean Museum
Sarah joined the Development Team at the Ashmolean in 2009.  Initially working on the museum's reopening events, donor recognition and prospect research, her role now focuses on appeals, stewardship and events, as well as the development database, donation boxes, and the museum's social media outputs and strategy.  She works closely with the museum's Marketing and Public Engagement teams.  Before joining the museum Sarah worked as a mental health charity in London assisting with tender-writing and budget preparation, and leadong on the rollout of a new bespoke operations database.

Lucy Shaw, Oxford ASPIRE Coordinator
Lucy has been working as the Oxford ASPIRE Coordinator since August 2012.  She has worked in the museum sector since the early 1990s, first as a social history curator in the East Midlands followed bu a stint at the Museums and Galleries Comission where she began to develop a strategic interest in the sector.  For the last 10 years she has worked as a consultant specialising in workfors and organisational development.  One of her main clients was the museums Association for whom she coordinated the Diversify, Monument Fellowship, Support and Challenge and Smarter Museums programme.  Lusy is a trained facilitator and coach.

Participants are invited to arrive from 10.30 for coffee.  The day will start promptly at 11.00 and will include a networking lunch.  We aim to finish the day by 15.30.
